"Mobile's My Home" is a celebration of culture in Mobile, Alabama, where people love their coastal food and music and look out for one another. The song captures the awe a person feels when they see and hear Mobile's Excelsior Band—something they never forget.
The song came to Will Phillips when he picked up a ukulele after a shoulder injury, and his 18-year-old son said, "Dad, you should write a song about Mobile." He imagined being far from home, with someone asking about his accent and where he was from, and how he'd respond with charm—telling them everything about the place he loves.
With the production and brilliance of Ben Brenner, Paid In Mullet laid down "Mobile's My Home" alongside Excelsior, Kenneth "Mystro" Brandon on piano, Nikeland Nichols, and Calep Lewis on violin and mandolin.
The Excelsior Band is believed to be the oldest marching jazz band in the United States. In 2022, they were selected as one of the National Endowment for the Arts' Heritage Fellows. They have marched in Mardi Gras parades, thrilling and lifting spirits for over 142 years.
For "Mobile's My Home," front men Hosea London (trumpet), Herbert Nelson (alto saxophone), Leon Rhoden (snare drum), Sean Thomas (tuba), and Ronnie Hunter (bass drum) bring their gifts to this song for the birthplace of Mardi Gras.
